William Woodrow "Bill" Laws, age 83, of Valley City, ND, passed away on September 23, 2025.
Bill was born in the Bronx, New York on December 19th, 1941 to William and Bernice (Rotella) Laws. His early education took him from PS32 in New York City to Oakhurst Elementary in Charlotte, NC, then to St. Leo's Military Academy in Belmont, NC, O'Donaghue Catholic School in Charlotte, Aquinas in Raleigh, Millbrook High School, and finally back to Aquinas High School. He grew up closely with his sister Sally, sharing a bond during their early years, and in 1953 they were joined by their younger brother Richard, completing the trio that would carry on the Laws family legacy. Before graduating, Bill enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1960, where he completed his high school degree and was stationed in Korea as a Radio Mechanic in the Armament & Electronics Maintenance Squadron of the 70th Combat Support Group..
After his service, Bill briefly pursued studies at the Jesuit seminary in Notre Dame, Indiana, before joining the Peace Corps. He later enrolled at North Carolina State University, where he earned a degree in landscape design. Bill went on to become a certified Master Mechanic, a career well-suited to his natural gifts. Known for his extraordinary ear, Bill could diagnose a motor's troubles simply by listening.
Music was another of Bill's many talents. With no formal instruction, he could pick up nearly any instrument and play it beautifully. His creativity and sharp mind carried through every part of his life, from fixing cars to making music, and his presence will be remembered with deep admiration.
Bill is survived by his daughter Beth and her children, Aaron (16) and Aurora (7); his sister Sally; his brother Richard; and many nieces and nephews.
The family welcomes thoughtful flowers sent to Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home or donations in Bill's memory made to the Veteran Affairs organization of the state and facility that you wish.
