Wally Grund, 94, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Fargo, ND, died Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo.
Wallace Arnold Grund entered this world on February 23, 1924 in Fargo, ND, born to August and Josephine (Jacobson) Grund. He grew up in Fargo and lived there all his life except 3 years in the US Navy.
Wally married Betty Ann Bonawitz on October 2, 1949 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Fargo. They were inseparable for 67 years as they served God and others.
His first job, in Wally’s words, had its ups and downs. He ran the elevator in the Black Building and then enlisted in the Navy, leaving the same day he enlisted. Wally went through four invasions in the Mediterranean. After the Navy, Wally worked for Krieg Construction Company for 18 years. In 1964 he joined the Air National Guard, retiring from there in 1984.
Wally loved the Lord and served at Elim Lutheran, St. Marks Lutheran and First Assembly. He served in many areas with the youth, couples clubs and choir. He loved sports, playing softball until he was in his sixties. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling.
Wally followed his children and grandchildren in all of their school and sporting events. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were absolute treasures to Wally. He and Betty prayed for all of them daily.
Wally is survived by his children, David (Brenna) Grund; Paul (Kim) Grund; and Mary Jo (Brad) Fandrich; grandchildren, Stacy, Lance (Bettina), Nicole (Luke), Jennifer, Codi (Jason), Heidi (Matt), Kaylee, Wally, Gretta (Jeremy), Michael and 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Joyce Nash.
