Vivian Marie (Burgess) Mashek, 85, of Fargo, died Saturday, July 16, 2016, at her home surrounded by family.
Vivian was born March 26, 1931, in Bertha, Minnesota to Mildred (Hoffarth) and Herbert Burgess. She attended business school in Fargo and worked in the office at Old Home Bakery where she met her husband, Edward Mashek. She married Ed in Hewitt, MN on June 10, 1951, and together they had three children. Vivian worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield before retiring in 1992.
During their sixty-three-year marriage, Ed and Vivian enjoyed travelling and volunteering. They were both active members of Eagles Club #153 and made many good friends through their participation there. Vivian was a volunteer at First Lutheran Church and Elim Nursing Home, as well as a supporter of the North Dakota Humanities Council.
Vivian enjoyed cheering on her Minnesota Twins and Vikings and was especially proud of the photo gallery she kept of her great-grandchildren dressed in Vikings uniforms. Vivian had a sharp wit and backed it up with a raised eyebrow that meant business. Her banana “nana” bread was unmatched and family members who visited never left without a care package containing a loaf along with various baked goods; especially peanut butter cups and molasses bars, and jars of homemade salsa, beet pickles, and antipasto.
Vivian is survived by her three children, Lynn (Steve) Johnson, Grand Forks, ND, Michele (Robert) Daugherty, Center, ND and Steve, Fargo, ND; eight grandchildren: Sara (Ken) Bakke, Brenna (Tom) Gerhardt, Katie (Bo) Klindworth, Kristi (Mike) Laverdure, Tarek Daugherty, Brooke (Bryan) Oas, and Matthew and Robyn Johnson; nine great-grandchildren: Sadie, Rowan, Natalie, Chay, Paxon, Brooklyn, Tryg, Lauren, and Zachary; three step great-grandchildren: Micaela, Gabe and Riley; one brother, Charles (Sylvia) Burgess, Elk River, Minnesota; one sister, Donna Cantwell, Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, and one special sister-in-law, Barb Mashek, Wyndmere, North Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, and one brother, Robert Burgess.
