Susan Jean "Susie," age 70, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, in Richmond, Va., after a lengthy battle with cancer. Her fierce will to live was a testament to her strength and an inspiration to her family and friends.
Susie was born November 19, 1946 to Marion and Clayton Quinnild in Brown County, S.D. Susie was the youngest of two daughters and even though they lived many states apart, the love and devotion she had for her family took her back to Minnesota and North Dakota every summer. She went to grade school in Finley, N.D. and graduated from Dickinson High School in 1964. She started her college degree at Dickinson State Teachers College and while there, she met and married Maury L. Erickson and had their daughter, Jaye Lyne Erickson in 1966. She and Maury lived in Ohio and Alabama briefly before settling in Richmond, Va. in 1969, where they welcomed their son, Jeffrey Quinn Erickson in 1970. She completed her education at VCU School of the Performing Arts, graduating Cum Laude with a degree in Theatre in 1982. Susie was a successful actress in the Richmond Theatre community and went on to teach acting to children at SPARC.
Her passion for teaching led her to teach watercolor and clay after excelling at classes in both at the Visual Arts Center. She was a talented, patient, dedicated teacher, beloved and respected by her students and fellow faculty. She was bestowed with the Shelly Shepherd Master Teacher Award in 2004. To the dismay of her students, she retired from the Visual Arts Center in August of 2013 after teaching there for more than 20 years.
Susie was preceded in death by parents, Marion A. Quinnild and Clayton L. Quinnild.
She is survived by her children, Jaye Lyne Erickson and Jeffrey Quinn Erickson, both of Richmond; grandson, Davis Quinn Erickson of Richmond; sister and brother-in-law, Sherry Colehour and Jeff Colehour of Willmar, Minn.; nephews and nieces, Scott and Alix Colehour of Minnetonka, Minn., Steve and Jenna Colehour of Chaska, Minn., Brad and Ann Marie Colehour of Mount Prospect, Illinois, Danny Colehour of Willmar, Minn., Courtney and Ryan Dirks of Hopkins, Minn., Billy Stephens of Minnetonka, Minn. and Alex Nelson of Minneapolis, Minn.; as well as nine great-nephews and nieces, whom she loved very much.
