Shirley Rinde, 92, passed away peacefully under hospice care on Feb 9, 2026, at Bethany on 42nd. Her family spent hours by her side and over video chat as they said goodbye.
Shirley Joann Rinde was born on December 7, 1933. She was born to Michael and Anna Birrenkott; raised in Breien and Bismarck ND, and graduated from Bismarck St. Mary's High School. After high school, she worked at the North Dakota State Capitol in the Vital Statistics Office. She met James H. Rinde, from Hoople, ND, who was stationed in Bismarck with the Army. They married on December 28, 1957, in Bismarck, ND, at St. Anne's Catholic Church. They settled in St. Thomas, ND, where they farmed and raised their daughter, Nancy, and son, James. Shirley was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church, an active member of the St. Thomas Altar Society and taught catechism classes for many years.
Jim and Shirley moved to north Fargo after retiring from farming. She was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and volunteered with the church and diocese. Shirley and Jim enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends, especially spending time with their children and grandchildren. She and Jim also enjoyed attending UND and NDSU basketball games, both at home and on the road. She was an avid walker and bike rider in the north Fargo neighborhoods. She and Jim enjoyed having their Ohio-raised granddaughter, Anne, living in Fargo and attending NDSU for her undergrad and graduate degrees. Shirley said Anne and her friends kept her and Jim feeling young. Their grandson, Zachary, made many trips to spend time with them, especially when his parents were living in Belgium. Shirley was appreciative of Zachary's technical expertise; he patiently showed her how to use her cell phone and other electronics. Shirley and Jim treasured their time with their grandchildren. Shirley was an avid card player, and loved to play UNO with her entire family.
After Jim's death in 2019, she moved to Touchmark and enjoyed playing trivia and listening to the musical events. She spent many nights playing cards with her son, Jim, during his visits to Touchmark. Shirley's last game of trivia (with assistance from Nancy and Tom) resulted in a win with bragging rights and a traveling trophy.
Shirley is survived by her children, Nancy (Tom) Zmyslinski, Fargo, ND, and James N. Rinde, Gahanna, OH, grandchildren, Anne (Aaron) Zmyslinski-Seelig, Bend, OR, and Zachary (Camlinh) Zmyslinski, Houston, TX, and great grandchildren, Runa, Silje and Thora Seelig, and Zuri and Zander Zmyslinski, her brother, Michael Birrenkott, Bismarck, ND, and many nieces and nephews.
Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Jim, parents Anna and Michael Birrenkott, sisters, Eileen, Dorothy, and Audrey, and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
The family would like to thank the loving caregivers at Bethany on 42nd and the support of HIA Hospice for the care and support of Shirley and her family during her time of need and care.
A Prayer Service will be held on Mar 12 at 7pm, with visitation one hour prior, at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held on Mar 13 at 10:30am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
Memorials are not necessary; however, those who wish to do so may make a donation in Shirley's name to HIA Hospice or Bethany Retirement Living.
Arrangements entrusted to Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home - Fargo, ND.
