Richard Arthur
Hanson
Sep 20, 1943 — Oct 4, 2026
Richard Arthur Hanson, affectionately known as “Meat,” passed away on October 4, 2026, at the VA Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
Rich was born on September 20, 1943, to Mabel Rosalie Larson and Berger Adolph Hanson. He was raised in Hickson, North Dakota, and proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1964.
On May 6, 1967, Rich married the love of his life, Sherry Solem. Together, they made their home in Fargo, where they raised their two daughters and built a life filled with family, friends, laughter, and many wonderful memories.
Rich worked as a truck driver for Gamble Robinson/Food Services of America for over 33 years. He was proud of his profession and was involved with the local Teamsters, serving on the board and participating in truck rodeos over the years.
More than anything, Rich will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor, and unwavering love for his family. His family meant the world to him, and there was nothing he enjoyed more than spending time with the people he loved.
Rich knew how to enjoy life. He loved old cars, the World of Outlaws, fishing, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers — “Go Pack Go!”. In his younger years, he was an avid snowmobiler and especially enjoyed time spent at the snowmobile shack, where there was never a shortage of stories, laughter, friends, and family.
Rich also loved to bowl, which is fitting because bowling is how he met Sherry. He loved dancing and was known to be a great two-stepper. On Friday nights, he enjoyed a cold PBR or a Colorado Bulldog. Rich had a special place in his heart for every dog, fortunate enough to be part of his life.
Rich is survived by his beloved wife, Sherry (Solem) Hanson of Fargo; his daughters, Lisa Hanson (Billy Baber) of Fargo and Sammi Tahtinen (Jamie Tahtinen); his three grandchildren, Brianna Baber, Alexander Tahtinen (Marissa), and Andrew Tahtinen (Kelsey); his brothers-in-law, Harold (Sue) Solem and Jerry (Lois) Solem; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel and Berger Hanson; his sister, Beverly Hanson; and his brothers, James, John, and Donald.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at the Fargo VA Medical Center for the kindness, compassion, and exceptional care they provided to Rich during the final days of his life.
Rich—our beloved “Meat”—will be deeply missed, but the laughter, stories, and memories he leaves behind will continue to be shared by all who knew and loved him.
Celebration of Life will be held at the Lower Wild Rice Cemetery in Hickson, N.D. on Saturday, October 10th at 1:00pm.
