Phyllis Rosella (Barber) Hoy, 97, of Fargo, ND (formerly of Michigan and Minnesota), passed away peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2026, at Sanford Hospice House in Fargo.
Born August 29, 1928, to Lottie and Fred Barber near Rose City, Michigan, Phyllis was the fourth of five children (June, Ray, Betty, Phyllis, and Bobby). She grew up on a farm without running water or central heat, learning the value of hard work early while enjoying life's simple moments alongside her siblings. The family later moved to Drayton Plains, MI where she graduated from Clarkston High School in 1947, and began work for Consumers Power Company.
Phyllis married Willis Hoy on August 21, 1949, and enjoyed 62 years of marriage until Willis' passing in 2011. Together they built a life in Michigan, and later Minnesota, where Willis was a small business owner in the building trades and fence industry, while Phyllis managed the office, and a large garden, as they raised their two sons, Bob and Roger.
Known for her kindness, easy temperament, and sense of humor, Phyllis loved her growing family. She enjoyed collecting photos of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and took a personal interest in each of them. Family connection was a priority for Phyllis, especially during the holidays, and she remained in touch with her extended family for many years. Stylish in her youth, she made friends easily and offered an optimistic outlook, touching everyone around her.
After Willis' passing Phyllis moved to an apartment in north Fargo to be close to family and made many good friends in her final years at Highpointe. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, neighbor, and friend who lived with strength, grace, and a concern for others. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Phyllis is survived by her sons Robert (Sandra) Hoy of Fargo, ND, and Roger (Susanne) Hoy of Eden Prairie, MN; her grandchildren: Jim (Heidi) Hoy, Kristin (Aaron) Sorvig, Daniel Hoy, Madeline Hoy, Andrew Hoy, and Catherine Hoy; her great grandchildren: Dawson, Eleigh, and Bridger Hoy, and Beckham, Lauren and Elin Sorvig; along with extended relatives and many friends.
A Funeral Service will take place in the Chapel at Hope Lutheran Church in south Fargo, officiated by Pastor Steven Dunkel, at 10:00 am on July 8, 2026. Phyllis will be laid to rest beside her husband, Willis, at Oakwood Cemetery, Harwood, ND, immediately following the Service. Arrangements by Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, ND.
