Oscar “Ossie” K. Sandvik went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 13, 2009, in the comfort of home. Oscar was born to Ole Peter and Frida (Bergseth) Sandvik April 9, 1920, at Fargo, North Dakota’s St. John’s Hospital. He was a sibling to sisters, Helen, Bertha and Evelyn and brothers, Harold, Raymond, Robert and Herbert. Oscar married Lottie Herbranson July 22, 1942. Lottie preceded Oscar into heaven in 2002. Oscar graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1938. He started working days, as a teen, to help support family as a Western Union delivery boy. As an adult, he started his career with Dacotah Paper in 1939, until he retired as Vice President in 1990. Oscar remained on the Board of Directors after his retirement. Oscar graduated from the University of Utah in 1943, with a degree in Meteorology. And then became a Meterologist with the 18th Weather Squadron. Oscar served his country from July 1942 until October 1945, as a weather forecaster in the 91st Bomb Squad based in Basingborn, England. He was discharged from the service at the rank of Tech Sergeant. Oscar was devoted for 70 years to Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, Minnesota, after his attendance in 1938. He was also a loyal member to the Fargo Lions Club, Moorhead Association of Credit Management, Moorhead Rod and Gun Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Ragged Irregulars (91st Bombing Squad), the 8th Air Force Historical Society and Fraternal Order of Eagles. Oscar’s hobbies were camping, hunting, fishing and photography. He enjoyed spending summers at their lake home with family and friends at Spruce Hills. Oscar was a mentor to many young people. Oscar was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lottie; brothers, Robert Sandvik, Harold Sandvik, Raymond Sandvik and Herbert Sandvik; sisters, Helen Ritter and Bertha Miller. Oscar is survived by his sons, Kirby Sandvik, West Fargo, ND; Kim Sandvik, Fargo, ND; sister, Evelyn Nelson, Bemidji, MN; granddaughter, Amy Sandvik, Sparks NV; grandson, Kyle Sandvik, Fargo, ND; great-granddaughter, Aliviah Sandvik; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Service: Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at 10:00 AM, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN. Visitation: Monday, February 16, 2009, from 5-7 PM, at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, ND.
