Mercille Hovland Moen was born June 24, 1915 to Rev. Edward and Anna (Sonsthagen) Hovland at Maddock, ND. After her father died, she spent some time and summers during her school years with the Torger Hauge family, southwest of Heimdal. She graduated from Maddock High School in 1933. After that, she moved to Fargo and worked for several families, one of them being Dr. Hannah. Mercille had a lifetime friendship with the family. She attended Dakota Business College and later worked for the Fargo Café and Foss Drug Co. In 1950, she went to work for the Powers Hotel Co as private secretary to Ed Powers, Sr. She worked for them until 1971.
Mercille married Delbert Moen on August 27, 1955 and they made their home in Fargo. She was active on her own until 2008 and then lovingly cared for at home until 2014, when she moved to Rosewood. Mercille was a member of First Lutheran Church and served as Circle Chairman of Miriam Circle. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and served one year as President during the year of 1977-78. She enjoyed working diligently on genealogy, reading her Bible and Bible studies, chatting on the telephone, and reading and writing letters.
Mercille is survived by her husband, Delbert; daughter, Jacquelyn Behnke of Jacksonville, FL; granddaughters, Mary (Travis) Chambers and Susan (Steven) Montegari; sister-in-law, Florence Murbach of Lynwood, WA; four great-grandchildren, Claudia, Sophia, John, and Stefano, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials in honor of Mercille are preferred to First Lutheran Church, American Legion, or to the charity of your choice.
