Obituary

Mavis Lorraine Olson (Conrad), of Fargo, North Dakota, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at the age of 90. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who lived her life with kindness, generosity, and a deep faith.

Mavis was the center of her family, her home the gathering place for Sunday night suppers and family holidays. With the table set for twelve or more, Mavis poured her love into everyone through a full plate and a safe place to gather. She was a good mother and spoke fondly of the deep love, joy, and responsibility of being a parent and grandparent.

Her family holds dear memories of Mavis selling cotton candy at the Shrine Circus, camping and fishing trips, reading and playing cards well beyond bedtime, slumber parties, the best potato salad, and her garden filled with her favorite flowers, zinnias, cosmos, and peonies. In all she did, she tended and nurtured, providing strength and graciousness to all she knew.

Mavis was born April 13, 1935 to Edgar and Elsie Conrad (Heidecker) in Jasper, Minnesota. She graduated from Jasper High School in 1953, then moved to St. Paul where she attended Macalester College, and met Charles (Chuck) T. Olson. On November 25, 1955, Mavis and Chuck were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper, MN; they were partners for 65 years and raised three children, before Chuck passed away in October 2020.

Following their marriage, Mavis, Chuck, and their children, David, Karen, and Kim, lived in the Twin Cities, where Mavis was a stay-at-home mother, then worked for 7-Hi Rexall Drug, before they moved to Fargo, North Dakota in 1976. In Fargo, she worked for the NDSU Varsity Mart Bookstore, retiring in 2000.

Mavis was a devoted Christian and a member of Hope Lutheran Church in North Fargo since 1976, where she was a greeter, member of the prayer chain, and Bible Study member. During her life, she generously gave her time as a volunteer, including a Sunday School teacher for many years, at Merit Care (Sanford) gift shop for 13 years, with local food pantries, and the El Zagal Shrine, where she and Chuck were members since 1985.

Mavis was a proud and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother, whose family deeply loves and cherishes her. This strong, loving, and caring woman will forever be in our hearts. She is loved and will be dearly missed by many.

She is survived by a brother and two sisters, their spouses, children, David Olson (Sherry), Karen Moore, and Kim Dunford (Chuck); sixteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In a celebration of her life, a visitation will be held Friday, February 6, 2026, at 2:00pm at Hope Lutheran Church in North Fargo, with a funeral service at 3:00pm. The funeral will also be live streamed through the Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home website. Burial at Riverside Cemetery will be at a later date.
