Marlene Buus (nee Shockman), age 75, died in her sleep just before dawn on June 21, 2012, while at home with her devoted husband Marv and other family members. They had received help in her last days from Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Marlene and her twin sister Marlyce were born at their parents' home in Berlin, N. Dak. on February 20, 1937. Their parents were Alice Laning and Robert Shockman. The Shockman family moved to Oakes, N. Dak., in 1944, and the twins graduated from high school there in 1955.
Marlene married Marvin Buus of Wahpeton, N. Dak., in 1959, a year after she finished nurses’ training at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fargo (now Sanford). Marv and Marlene lived in Carrington, Pembina, Grafton, and Valley City in the early years of their marriage. They bought a home in Fargo in 1972 and have lived here ever since. Their son Jim Buus and his wife Cheri Marthaller Buus also live in Fargo. Their two daughters, Joni Buus Beikler (husband Jim) and Katherine Buus Campbell (husband Bob) live in Ft. Collins, Col. Marlene is also survived by her husband Marv, grandchildren Erin and Elise (age 17) and grandson Evan (age 15), her sisters Marlyce Helm of Minneapolis, and Karen Darby (husband Ed) of Fort Collins, Col., and many nieces and nephews.
Besides being a registered nurse working at St. John’s Hospital in Fargo, Marlene was a very devoted caregiver to older relatives and friends. She enjoyed painting and became involved with the local arts community as well as book clubs and bridge groups. She loved to travel and was an avid Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings fan.
