Obituary

Louise Alleta McCleary Herr passed away peacefully on September 23, 2026, at Eventide Nursing Home in Fargo, North Dakota.

Louise was born on January 24, 1935, in Brownwood, Texas, to Thomas and Bertha Melton. A social butterfly from an early age, she adapted easily as her family moved from Brownwood to Sherman and then Fort Worth, Texas. She graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth in 1953 and worked at Southern Bell after graduation.

On May 29, 1954, Louise married Eldred “Mike” McCleary. They made their home on a farm near Marion, North Dakota, where they raised their three children. They belonged to the EUB Church and later the Methodist Church in Marion, where Louise was active in many church activities. Eldred passed away on April 10, 1981. Louise continued to live on the farm with her youngest son, Donald.

Louise married Edwin Herr on July 9, 1983, in Marion. They lived in McClusky, North Dakota, for several years before moving to Bismarck in 2006. They also enjoyed wintering in Mesa, Arizona, for 14 years. Edwin passed away on October 27, 2017.

The following year, Louise moved to Eventide Assisted Living in Fargo to be closer to her son Mike, his wife Cindy, and their family. She enjoyed her time there, made many friends and was thrilled to celebrate her 90th birthday in 2025.

Louise is survived by her children: Michael (Cindy) McCleary of Fargo, and their daughters, Katie and Maggie; Gail (Greg) Scallon of Pine Haven, Wyoming, and their sons, Dustin (Danielle) Scallon and Lance (Laurel) Scallon, both of Gillette, Wyoming; and Donald McCleary (David Beyer) of Longmont, Colorado. Dustin and Danielle’s children are Taylor and Jaycee of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Trigg. Lance and Laurel’s children are Alivia, Sylvia and Roman.

She is also survived by her stepdaughter, Aleece (Jim) Rogers of Bogart, Georgia, and their sons, Elliott (Julie) Rogers and Eric (Melinda) Rogers. Elliott and Julie’s children are Ian, Colin, Emma and Cooper, and Eric and Melinda’s daughters are Cecelia and Ada. Louise is also survived by her brother, Tom (Judy) Melton of The Colony, Texas, and many nieces and nephews.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Eldred “Mike” McCleary and Edwin Herr; her granddaughter, Krista McCleary; and her sisters, Jean, Patsy, Barbara and Marilyn.
