Lorna M. Mathias Fargo, ND
It's with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lorna Mathias from this life to the
next to be with her Lord and Savior, as well as joining family and friends who have gone
home before her.
Lorna was born May 3rd, 1952, in Aberdeen, SD. She spent her growing up years on a farm
by Oakes, ND. She graduated from Oakes High School in 1970.
Lorna continued her education at North Dakota State University, graduating in May 1974.
She taught high school English and French in Sharon, Finley and Garrison, ND. She decided
to further her education and enrolled in the Counseling and Vocational program at North
Dakota State University completing her masters degree in 1981.
She then worked at Sheyenne Valley Vocational Center in Cooperstown, ND. After a couple
of years there she decided she preferred to live in the big city and took a job as a counselor
for the YWCA for the Displaced Homemakers Program in Fargo, ND. The program was
discontinued a few years later. She then worked as a Vocational counselor for IMARC.
In 1987, Lorna started her own company, Vocational Rehabilitation Specialties where she
worked with insurance companies helping people get back into the workforce. After thirty
three years she retired.
In July 2025, Lorna was diagnosed with acute leukemia and succumbed to the disease on
May 9th, 2026. She fought a hard fight bravely and with great determination.
She celebrated the blessings of her life with her family recently as they gathered for her 74th
birthday. It was a day of reminiscing and laughter enjoyed by all. It was a day she looked
forward to and the smiles she had let us know she felt loved.
Even though she didn't have children, she was blessed with seven wonderful nieces and
nephews who she loved very much.
Lorna is survived by her brother, Ernie Mathias; nieces and nephews, Kathy (Todd; deceased)
Wood, Brenda (Harry) Tyre, Bruce Mathias, Robert (Jennifer) Mathias, Laurie (Jon) Hansen,
the late Tracie (Richard) Ruch, and Nicole (Brian) Ecker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Martha (Wertz) Mathias; brother and
sister-in-law, Roger and Bonnie Mathias; sister-in-law, Carol Mathias; along with several
beloved aunts and uncles.
Please don't be sad at her death, because all are rejoicing in her heavenly home, praising
God. As Jesus was resurrected on Easter Sunday, we will all be resurrected and given the
gift provided by Jesus sacrifice and death. Because of him, we too shall live forever in
paradise.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, May 18, 2026, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1258
Broadway N, Fargo, ND, at 2:00 PM. Visitation will begin at the church one hour prior. A private
family internment will be held at Oakes View Cemetery, Oakes, ND at later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to HIA Heather's House in Fargo, ND.
