Laverne Kallod

October 16, 1925 — December 12, 2010

LaVerne (Sissy) Jane Kallod, 85, of 1534 11th St N, Fargo, ND 58102, went home to be with her Lord after surviving over 22 years with cancer, on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, in the Sanford Palliative Care Unit, Fargo. Prayer and Funeral Services will be held at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, 309 4th St N, Fargo. The Visitation will be on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm with the Prayer Service at 7:00 pm. The Funeral service will be on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at 10:30 am with visitation at 9:30 am. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, ND. LaVerne (Abrahamson) Kallod was born October 16, 1925, in Tokio, ND. The daughter of Charlie and Anna (Asfelt) Abrahamson. She grew up and completed her 8th grade education in Tokio. On Oct. 16, 1942, she married James Joseph Kallod Jr. in Devils Lake, ND. From 1942 to 1946, while James was serving in WWII, LaVerne operated the family Tokio General Store. In 1947 James and LaVerne moved to Fargo. In 1954 they established the current business of Kallod Carpet & Furniture. For 41 years LaVerne and James were well known for collecting and distributing clothing and toys to the families and children on seven reservations in ND, SD, and MN. LaVerne continued this work for two additional years following the passing of James. LaVerne was active in the following organizations: Washington Elementary PTA, Boy Scouts of America, Sunday School teaching, member of Circle Eight and Quilters of Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Swedish Historical Society, Lifetime Auxiliary Member of American Legion, VFW and DAV. She also volunteered at the VA Hospital and Rosewood On Broadway for many years. LaVerne’s presence would always light up a room. She was a positive influence and friend to everyone. Her strong spirit and dedication to humanity was evident through her generosity of her time and talents. LaVerne is survived by four sons: Larry (Bonnie) Kallod, Jerry Kallod, Randy (Mary) Kallod, Tracy Kallod and one daughter: Twyla Kallod. LaVerne was blessed with eight grandchildren: Darren (Michelle) Kallod, Anthony (Ann) Kallod, Rebekah (Lawrence) Backman, Ashley Kallod, James Kallod III, Annaliese Kallod, Benjamin and Charlie Beyer. Nine Great Grandchildren: Brenna, Nicole, Micah Kallod, Luke, Nathaniel, Caitlyn Kallod, Cole, Kenna, Genet Backman. One brother Rodger Abrahamson, and one sister Mary Ann Hansen. LaVerne was preceded in death by her infant daughter, husband, parents and five brothers. The family asks that memorials be sent to Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, 309 4th Street North, Fargo, ND 58102. The memorial funds will be used to purchase new hymnals in honor of LaVerne.
