Joyce Jeanette Lunde, 91, of Fargo, ND, passed away on Aug. 9, 2013 at Essentia Health in Fargo, following a brief illness.
Joyce Volla was born Feb 25, 1922 to Ruth and Henry Volla in West Salem, WI. She was raised in western ND, attending high school in Belfield, ND. After graduation, she moved to the family farm in Blanchard, ND.
Joyce enlisted in the US Navy in 1943, during WWII. She served as a shopkeeper in San Francisco until 1946. She was proud of her contribution to the US military services. She attended Interstate Business College in Fargo following her discharge.
Joyce married Arthur Lunde in Blanchard, ND on May 30, 1947. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Bethany Homes in Fargo for 19 years.
Joyce enjoyed cooking and baking; making over 500 lefse in a season, making apple butter from a tree in her yard and sharing the bounty. She was an avid crafter, making over 40 quilts and donating them to local people with disabilities, crocheting snowflakes, afghans, doilies and more, sharing them readily with friends and family. She liked reading, sewing, embroidery, and her garden roses. She was known to be “independent and self-reliant”, also caring and sharing. Her handcrafted gifts touched many hearts and her warmth, wit and generosity will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her daughters: JoAnn (Robert) Johnson and Janell Lunde, both of Fargo, Cheryl (Roger Ginn) Lunde of Wells, ME, and Mary (Charles) Tribbey of Maui, HI, and two grandchildren: Alison Johnson of Bronx, NY, and Travis (Melanie) Johnson of West Fargo, four nieces and nephews and families and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Art Lunde, and her brothers: Ken Volla, Merlin Volla, and Wayne Volla, and sister-in-law, Beverly Volla.
