John R. Challey was born September 8, 1930 in Fargo to parents Andrew and Agnes Challey. He grew up in Fargo and graduated from Central High school in 1948. John went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota and later from North Dakota Agricultural College (now known as NDSU), where he received his Masters in Zoology in 1955. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin, receiving a PhD in Parasitology in 1962, which he applied to developing methods to control parasites and diseases in the poultry industry.
Following his scientific career, John worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. During his retirement, he was strong supporter of Audubon Dakota and the Nature Conservancy.
John died June 2, 2016 at Bethany on University after a long battle with ALS. Cremation has taken place and, as requested, no services will be held.
