It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Hombre, a beloved Yellow-Naped Amazon parrot who brought joy to generations of Fargo families, especially its youngest residents. Hombre passed away on May 25, 2025, at the remarkable age of 47.
For more than 45 years, Hombre was a constant companion and a vibrant presence in the community. He was more than a pet. He was a local fixture, a gentle entertainer, and a friend to countless children and adults alike. Mary, his owner, would like to thank everyone who got as much pleasure from Hombre, and later, from Qtip, as she did.
Hombre was best known for his love of people, particularly children. For nearly four decades, Halloween became a cherished tradition, as families returned year after year to visit Hombre, hear him talk, and share in the joy of the season. Alongside his companion Qtip in later years, Hombre helped create lasting memories for those who stopped by, many of whom made it an annual tradition. His absence was deeply felt this past Halloween.
Beyond the neighborhood, Hombre played a meaningful role in the early efforts to establish what would become the Fargo Zoo. As part of a small group of dedicated advocates, Hombre participated in numerous community outreach events, delighting audiences while helping promote the vision of a local zoo. His natural charm often made him the center of attention. During speaking events, he and Mary would sometimes wait in the hallway until presentations concluded, as Hombre’s friendly “hello” to children would captivate the entire room.
For approximately 25 years, Hombre also volunteered at Bonanzaville, warmly greeting visitors, especially during Pioneer Days. His travels took him to Yunker Farm, local schools, nursing homes, and countless community events. Children would often ask if Hombre could stay the whole day or even join them on field trips.
Weekends were frequently spent at campgrounds, where Hombre visited with the many friends he had made over the years. In more recent times, groups of neighborhood children would come to visit him at home, continuing the legacy of connection and joy he always inspired.
Hombre is deeply missed, but his impact lives on in the countless smiles, laughter, and memories he created across decades. His life stands as a testament to the unique bond between animals and community.
