Harlan Kulland

February 16, 1944 — May 20, 2009

Harlan D. Kulland, 65, of Fargo, ND, died unexpectedly May 20, 2009. He was born to Harold & Nina Kulland, a farming family, near Stanley, ND, on February 16, 1944. Following graduation from Minot State College, he was drafted and served in the U.S. Marines. After his service, he worked in accounting and business in Fargo. He married Emily Pohribnak on August 23, 1970. Shortly thereafter, he became a member of the ND Air National Guard where he worked for over 20 years. After his retirement from the Guard, he worked for Noridian Administration Services in the Medicare department. For fun, friends and family contributed to his vast elephant collection. Harlan loved going to Redhawks baseball games, and even helped coach the FM Challengers team. He was an avid bowler most of his life, participating in league and Guard tournaments. He enjoyed activities related to numbers, which led to his longtime involvement as Treasurer in the NDANG Enlisted Association. His parents helped shape his hobbies as well as his values, instilling a love of family and the importance of pursuing a higher education. Emily’s coworkers recognized Harlan in the Meritcare Children’s hospital because he always brought treats. Since he said he was a Hippie before he was a Hooligan, this last year he felt free to grow out his hair for his hairstyling granddaughters, Grace and Stella, who were an incredible part of his life. Papa Harlan loved to hold grandbaby Max. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Byron (Vietnam MIA/KIA), and nephew Curtis Wallgren. He is survived by his wife Emily; daughters Priscilla (K.C.) Nelson, Aberdeen, SD, Ashley Kulland, Milwaukee, WI; sister Karen (Robert) Wallgren, Wadena, MN; brother Lee (Cheri) Kulland, Racine, WI; grandchildren, Grace, Stella and Max Nelson, all of Aberdeen, SD; nephews Troy (Angie) Kulland, Muscatine, IA, Derek Kulland, Wausau, WI; nieces Monica (Tyler) Woosley, Hampshire, IL, Kay (Chuck) Richter, Cold Springs, MN, Tracie (Chad) Bestor, Dodge Center, MN; great nephews Logan, Drew, & Breck Richter; Dayne Kulland, & great niece Elyse Bestor. Visitation: Monday, May 25, 2009 from 5-7 pm at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home. Prayer Service: Monday, May 25, 2009 at 7pm at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home. Funeral: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 9am at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND. Internment: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 3pm at ND Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or locally to Meritcare Children’s Hospital, for nursing continuing education.
