Gothard “Knute” Knutson passed away in his sleep at Sanford Hospice Center in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2020.

Knute was born and raised in Pelican Rapids, MN, the oldest son of Gothard and Alma Knutson. Friends and family knew him as Knute but to older Pelican Rapids residents, he answered to “Junior” until reaching the age of 70. A graduate of Pelican Rapids High School, Knute joined the Marine Corps during the Korean War, serving for two years in the US and Korean theater.

Following his military service, he attended Concordia College and Moorhead State University majoring in Industrial Arts Education. He met the love of his life, Marilyn Ann Miller, a young music teacher, in Pelican Rapids, during this time and they were married in 1958. The couple taught in Revillo, SD and Casselton, ND before finally settling in Fargo where they raised their family and Knute began his 30-year career training and teaching mentally handicapped adults at the Evaluation and Training Center. Knute’s dedication enriched the lives of hundreds of young adults, helping them to achieve independence and lead dignified, productive lives. Truly a labor of love, Knute often claimed “I was at the Evaluation and Training Center for 30 years but never worked a day.” Knute retired from the Center in 1992 but continued teaching as an English language tutor for several years.

Knute was a skilled wood turner and wrote several articles for national publications. At First Lutheran Church, he was an usher and part of the Helping Hands group. A motorcycle enthusiast, he burned up area roads on his Harley Davidson and made a memorable trip to Sturgis, SD with his younger brother, Robert. A loving husband and father, he celebrated 55 years of marriage to Marilyn and supported his boys in every activity they participated in, from t-ball games to science fairs.

Knute is survived by his son and daughter-in–law Paul and Sonja, son and daughter- in-law Jeff and Laura, brother and sister-in-law Robert and Rita, and grandchildren Isaac, Micah, Philip, Alma and Jan.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gothard and Alma and his wife Marilyn.

A private family service will be held. The service will be available via live-stream on the Hanson-Runsvold website on Monday, October 26 at 2pm. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, ND.
