George Gibb, 92, of Fargo, passed away peacefully at the VA Medical Center with family at his side, on Monday May 18, 2015.
George was born December 5, 1922, in Fargo, ND, to Robert and Annie (Collins) Gibb. George was the youngest of 8 children 4 boys, and 4 girls, and the last of this generation of the Gibb Clan. He graduated from Fargo Central High School as class president in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII and was stationed in Central Europe as a Platoon Sergeant in the 86th Black Hawk Division. During his service he received the following medals: Asiatic Pacific Service medal, European African Middle East Service medal, American Theater Service medal, good Conduct medal, and Victory medal. In 1944 his unit was demobilized and he was Honorably Discharged. George then returned to Fargo to work alongside his brothers Bob, Don, and Dave in the family business his father Robert started 100 years ago.
While out one evening with friends, George met and danced with Lorraine Barnes at The Crystal Ball Room, and it was love at first sight. He married Lorraine on August 12, 1947, in Moorhead, MN. They made their home in Fargo, ND where he managed the Sewer and Water Division of the family business, Robert Gibb and Sons, until his retirement. George was also a long time member of the Board of Directors at The Children’s Village, and in 2007 George was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of General Contractors.
George enjoyed summers at Pelican Lake and later winters in Palm Desert, CA. George loved life, his family, friends, many poodles, work, and all those who worked with him. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. He enjoyed spending many days at his office even into his 92nd year. He also enjoyed playing golf, handball, curling, baseball, and watching football. He was also proud of many holes in one and other tournament trophies.
George was a longtime member of the Elks, VFW, American Legion, and El Zagal Shrine Escort Motor Patrol. He was also a member of the Ironwood Country Club, Detroit Lakes Country Club, and Fargo Country Club where he enjoyed many great laughs & rounds of golf with friends & family.
George was preceded in death by his wife; parents, three brothers, Bob, Don and Dave Gibb and four sisters, Jean McCulloch, Anne Rollins, Agnes Mork, Jesse Beaton, and their spouses.
George is survived by two daughters, Laurie Gibb and Cynthia (Randy) Lien; grandson, George (Katie) Perlenfein; great granddaughter due August 2015; and many nieces and nephews.
