Eddy "Ed"
Herrmann
December 25, 1937 – May 14, 2026
Eddy Herrmann, born Valius Safranauskas, passed away at the age of 88 on May 14, 2026 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. He was born December 25, 1937 at Marijampole, Lithuania to Franas and Anele Safranauskas.
Later his family relocated to Germany where Valius and his five siblings were orphaned. Two years afterward they were flown to the United States by Lutheran Social Services and adopted by the Herrmann family near Otter Creek, ND. After four years the adoption was discontinued and the children moved to Fargo. Valius chose the name “Eddy” and became a foster son to Fred & Selma Fiechtner, who remained an important part of his life.
Ed met his future wife, Carol, before serving three years in the U.S. Army. After his return, they married on August 22, 1959. Ed often said, “My life began when I met Carol.”
Ed attended New Salem High School through the 10th grade. He also attended Dakota Business School on an Army scholarship. He graduated from Dale Carnegie Course. Ed dedicated 43 years to Nodak Stores as Appliance Sales Manager.
He was a charter member of the Exchange Club of West Fargo. Ed had a deep love of music, singing for many years in his church choir and with the F-M Mens Barbershop Chorus. He enjoyed time at the lakes and with his hobbies such as golfing (two holes in one), metal detecting, coin collecting, bowling, tennis, fishing, and hunting. Ed cherished his family---especially his four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Ed & Carol also enjoyed five years of wintering in Arizona before the call of the grandchildren brought them back closer to the nest.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Carol; his sons, Michael (LeAnn) and Mark (Lisa); grandchildren, Dustin Herrmann (Leah), Tara Herrmann, Amanda Johnson (Eric), and Paige Herrmann (Aaron). Running circles around him were great grandchildren, Liv, Ellie, and James Herrmann, and Violet and Everett Johnson.
He is also survived by his siblings, JoAnn Forsell, Carol Freeman (Richard), Albert Alderman; brother-in-law, Marty Thompson (Anita); sister-in-law, Joan Fiechtner; sister, Eunice Menezes (Euo); and many nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Franas & Anele Safranauskas; siblings, Lydia Thomas (Herbert), Evalt Safranauskas, Wanda Andrusiak (John) and Gustaf Safranauskas (Korona), Alma Gerber (Robert) and Erika Thompson; foster parents, Fred & Selma Fiechtner; brothers, Gerald Fiechtner, Robert Fiechtner (Sandy); niece, Sherry Eungard (Tom); and brother-in-law, Derek Forsell.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 20, at 10:00 a.m, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., both at Atonement Lutheran Church, Fargo. Lunch will be served after the service with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery in Fargo. The service will be livestreamed on the Hanson-Runsvold website.
If so desired, memorials can be sent to Juvenile Myositis (Cure JM Foundation) in honor of his great granddaughter, Liv Herrmann, who bravely lives with Juvenile Dermatomyositis. Memorials may also be given to Atonement Lutheran Church or to a charity of your choice.
Well done, good and faithful servant.
