Donald “Red” Slayton, 91, of Fargo, ND, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2009. Donald Conrad Slayton was born August 3, 1917, in Belfield, North Dakota, son of Iver and Christine (Winkels) Slayton. He was with the North Dakota Air National Guard for 31 years until his retirement in 1977. He married Roselle Iverson in 1969, in First Lutheran Church, Fargo. She died in 1987. Don was a big sports fan and his passion was playing golf. He started caddying in 1928, at the age of 11, and would pitch his tent at the Fargo Country Club as a young boy. He won many golf tournaments and was All City Champion in 1953. He was inducted into the North Dakota Golf Association Hall of Fame in 1987. He was a life long member of the Fargo Country Club, the Elks, VFW, American Legion and First Lutheran Church in Fargo. Don is survived by one brother, Lowell (Zella) Slayton, Buffalo, WY; sister-in-law, Margaret Ann (Dale) Anderson, Moorhead, MN; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roselle; his parents; a sister, Hazel; and three brothers, Einar, Bill and Jim. Funeral Service: Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at 10:00 AM, at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home Chapel, Fargo, ND. Visitation: One hour prior to the service. Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, ND.
