Celebration of Life
Burial
Bernice Corrine (Dahle) Berg passed away shortly after her 100th birthday, on February 22, 2026, at Bethany on the Lake in Alexandria, MN. She was a lifelong resident of Elbow Lake, MN.
Bernice was born at home on February 13, 1926, in Stony Brook Township, Minnesota to Gemelia and Carl Dahle. As a child she attended country school through 8th grade, then went on to graduate from Elbow Lake High School.
As a young woman, Bernice helped support the family farm, alongside her parents, by cooking for threshing crews, caring for the animals, and performing other numerous tasks around the farm. As the oldest of four, Bernice helped her mother care for her siblings, a duty she excelled in and one she would say brought her closer to them. She continued the close relationship with her siblings while they raised their growing families together. She told many stories of the fun adventures experienced with her best friend, Aunt Percy when they were young.
She was united in marriage to James Berg on September 24, 1944, at Rock Prairie Lutheran Church. During their 76 years together, they raised their two children, Sandra and Don, on their family farm south of Wendell. She loved being a mother and raised her children with an unmatched level of patience and devotion.
Bernice possessed a vast array of talents and knowledge, from farming to sewing elegantly tailored dresses and clothing. After a hard day's work, when the house was quiet, she always made time to rock her babies to sleep. She moved through life with quiet confidence, always believing and accomplishing whatever she set her mind to. She loved gardening, tending to numerous flower beds and her large vegetable garden, she kept them all immaculate throughout her life, even into her late 90's. She was constantly learning creative ways to protect her precious vegetables from "those pesky deer and rabbits". Despite the animals trying their hardest, she was always victorious in the end and produced enough fruits and vegetables to can for the off-season. The fresh produce used in her cooking made her meals stand apart from the rest.
She worked in Wendell as the school cook, then at a local bakery for some time while raising children and farming alongside her husband Jim. She loved teaching Sunday School at Trinity Lutheran Church. For three generations, she shared her devotion to Christ and instilled that same faith and dedication in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Sunday school and confirmation led to many wonderful weekends spent at Grandma's house, filled with lefse, hotdish, sewing lessons, and T-Ball in the backyard.
For those who knew her, we will never forget her passion for life, her genuine kindness, undeterred perseverance, and unfaltering strength and commitment to her family. She inspired those around her with her unwavering trust and devotion to the Lord. Her favorite poem "Footprints" was a daily reminder to her that her faith would carry her through any hardship she faced. Her faith, offering peace, carried her through each of life's trials; she embraced her loved ones during hard times and gave shelter to those who needed a soft place to land. She welcomed everyone with an open invitation to share a strong cup of coffee, a listening ear, and her famous homemade bars.
She will be deeply missed by many and welcomed with open arms by those who have been waiting for her arrival in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Bernice is survived by her daughter, Sandra Geris; her granddaughters, Jessica (Mike) Jensen, Kara (Jim Keaton) Berg, and Sarah (Brian) Hoffman; her great-grandchildren, Brett (Seth VanCamp) Peterson, Taylor (Daniel McMahon) Peterson, Trevor (Samantha Helmbrecht) Peterson, and baby girl Hoffman due in June; and her great-great-grandsons, Beckham and Rome McMahon; along with many nieces and nephews who she loved deeply.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Gemelia Dahle; her husband, Jim Berg; her son, Don Berg; and her siblings, Ray and Gordon Dahle and Norma (Dahle) Lee.
Bernice spent the last few years of her life at the Alexandria Assisted Living and she spoke often of the kindness she was shown there. Thank you for the tender, loving care they gave her. Finally, thank you to Bethany on the Lake and Moments Hospice for their care during her final days.
