Bernard “Bernie” Oliver Sateren, 85, of Fargo, ND, died Friday, March 25, 2011, at Sanford Health, Fargo. He was born near Corinth, ND on February 10, 1926 to Hans and Mari (Fosse) Sateren, immigrants from Kvikne, Fron, Norway, like so many of their neighbors in Divide County. He grew up working on their farm (speaking Norwegian until grade school), taken to school by his dad in a horse drawn wagon and a sleigh in the winter. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944, and was on his way to the Pacific theater when he was pulled off the troop ship in Pearl Harbor, as they needed a medic. After the war he studied at UND and graduated with a degree in accounting. He married Marian Knudson in Fargo in 1952 and he later studied at the University of Michigan; He and Marian lived in Grand Forks from 1952 until moving to Fargo in 1968. Bernard worked for the IRS for many years, later had his own accounting business, and worked for Sahr's Sudden Service Station until his death. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, gardener, and debater, curious about everything, and loved his cameras and his Ipad for emailing his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Marian and his children: Lee (Lynn) Oldenburg, Billings, MT, Leslie (David) Hegge, Fargo, ND, Cory (Camille) Sateren, Ashland, WI and Warren Sateren, Washington, DC. His grandchildren are Gretchen Oldenburg and Peter Oldenburg, Billings, MT, Neal (Sarah) Hegge, London, UK, John Hegge and Tom Hegge, Boston, MA, Kaia Sateren and Paul Sateren, Ashland,WI. He is also survived by his siblings Clarence and Helen, Boise, ID, and Palmer Torgerson, Spokane, WA. Funeral: Monday, March 28, 2011, 10:30am at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND. Visitation: Sunday, March 27, 2011 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, ND, followed by a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.
