Q: What is cremation?
A: Cremation is a form of final disposition for the body. The process reduces the body to its basic elements via evaporation and heat, at a temperature of 1,700 to 2,000 degrees. The final result is not actually ashes, but bone fragments.
Q: Where does cremation take place?
A: In the FM area cremation takes place at Riverside cemetery in Fargo. The process takes approximately 2 hours.
Q: What is the difference between a funeral and a memorial service?
A: For a funeral service the body is present and for a memorial service the body is not present.
Q: Do I need a funeral home?
A: No, however, most families find it helpful to have the funeral home coordinate the necessary activities, which includes filing of paperwork and notifying the necessary authorities.
Q: Do I have to be embalmed?
A: Embalming is required if cremation is not completed within 72 hours from the time of death (with refrigeration available, 48 hours without refrigeration). Embalming is also required if a public viewing will be held, the body is transferred by common carrier or the person died of a communicable disease.
Q: Can I go to the crematory?
A: Yes. Riverside cemetery currently has a viewing area for family members.
